"Iced out" (also called "bust down") refers to a watch that has been modified after purchase — the original bezel, dial, case, and sometimes bracelet are set with diamonds or diamond alternatives. The watch is disassembled, stones are hand-set into each component, and the piece is reassembled and polished. This is aftermarket craftsmanship — not a factory option — and the quality varies enormously depending on who's doing the work.

Stone Choice: Moissanite vs CVD Lab Diamond

Important note on certification

Individual certificates apply to center stones only. Moissanite stones over 1 carat receive individual GRA certification. CVD lab diamonds over 0.5 carats receive individual IGI/GIA reports. The hundreds of small pavé stones on a fully iced watch receive batch-level certification — this is standard industry practice, not a sign of inferior quality.

Setting Styles

• Pavé / Micro-Pavé: Stones set very close together, creating a continuous surface of sparkle. Most labor-intensive. Highest stone density.
• Prong Set: Each stone held by small metal prongs. More visible metal. Easier to repair individual stones.
• Channel Set: Stones sit in a metal channel. Clean lines. Common on bezels and case sides.
• Machine Set: Pre-made settings. Faster and cheaper, but lower stone density. Entry-level option.

The Custom Process, Step by Step

1. Consultation & Quote (1–2 days): Share reference photos and preferences. Workshop provides an itemized quote and timeline.
2. 3D CAD Preview (2–3 days): A rendering shows the finished piece. Revise until satisfied — quality workshops offer unlimited revisions at this stage.
3. Hand-Setting (5–20 business days): Each stone is placed under a microscope. Duration depends on stone count. Progress photos should be standard.
4. QC & Delivery: Three quality checks — stone security, plating, overall finish. Real photos sent for approval before shipping.

What It Costs — Real Numbers

Based on workshop-direct pricing as of mid-2026:

Base watch not included. Bracelet iced builds add 20–40% to stone count and labor. CVD lab diamond builds run 2–4× the moissanite equivalent.

1. "Can I see recent work?" — Not portfolio photos from 3 years ago. Recent builds with real workshop photos.
2. "What moissanite grade do you use?" — D-F color, VVS clarity is the premium standard. If they can't answer, that's a red flag.
