You've seen them on wrists — fully iced-out timepieces that look like they cost six figures. But here's what most people don't realize: the vast majority of those watches were built by independent workshops, not luxury brands. And you can get one made for a fraction of what you'd expect.
This guide covers everything: what "iced out" actually means, how the stones are set, what materials to choose, what it costs, and the exact process from consultation to delivery.
"Iced out" (also called "bust down") refers to a watch that has been modified after purchase — the original bezel, dial, case, and sometimes bracelet are set with diamonds or diamond alternatives. The watch is disassembled, stones are hand-set into each component, and the piece is reassembled and polished. This is aftermarket craftsmanship — not a factory option — and the quality varies enormously depending on who's doing the work.
Most custom iced-out watches use one of these case platforms. At NOVAE ATELIER, we work across three main families:
| Case Shape | Dial Options | Typical Stone Count | Entry Price (Workshop) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square Case | Green, Blue, Arabic, Black | 300–800+ | $600–$1,500 |
| Octagonal Case | Rainbow, Silver, Gold, Black | 500–1,200+ | $1,400–$1,600 |
| Cushion Case | Sun & Moon, Silver | 400–900+ | $1,400–$1,500 |
These prices are for the stone-setting service with moissanite stones. The base watch is additional — either provided by you or sourced by the workshop.
This is the single biggest price driver for your build.
| Stone | Hardness | Brilliance | Cost vs Natural | Certification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moissanite (D-F VVS) | 9.25 Mohs | Higher fire than diamond | ~1/10th | GRA (>1ct center stones) |
| CVD Lab Diamond | 10 Mohs | Identical to natural diamond | ~1/5th | IGI/GIA (>0.5ct) |
| Natural Diamond | 10 Mohs | Reference standard | Full market price | GIA |
Individual certificates apply to center stones only. Moissanite stones over 1 carat receive individual GRA certification. CVD lab diamonds over 0.5 carats receive individual IGI/GIA reports. The hundreds of small pavé stones on a fully iced watch receive batch-level certification — this is standard industry practice, not a sign of inferior quality.
Based on workshop-direct pricing as of mid-2026:

| Hand-Set Bezel + Dial | 300–600 | $1,000–$1,500 | $3,500–$7,000 |
| Full Hand-Set | 600–1,200 | $1,400–$1,600 | $5,000–$12,000 |
