What Is Moissanite? The Complete 2026 Guide to the Diamond Alternative

Walk into any custom jewelry workshop today and you'll hear one word over and over: moissanite. It's the stone behind most "iced out" chains, watches, rings and grillz under $1,000 — including almost everything we make at NOVAE ATELIER. But what actually is it? Is it a fake diamond? Is it durable? Here's the straight answer.

What Is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a silicon carbide crystal (SiC) — a naturally occurring mineral that is extremely rare on Earth, first discovered by French chemist Henri Moissan in 1893 inside a meteor crater in Arizona. Because natural moissanite is essentially unavailable, virtually all moissanite in jewelry today is lab-created, produced in controlled facilities using a thermal process that grows the crystal over several weeks. That includes every stone we set at NOVAE ATELIER.

It is not a diamond, and it is not a fake. It is its own gemstone with its own chemistry, optical properties, and price — often mistaken for diamond because it looks similar and sparkles more.

Why Is It So Popular for Iced-Out Jewelry?

Three reasons:

• The look. Graded to our stone standard — D–F colour, VVS-grade clarity — moissanite is as bright as a diamond to the naked eye, and its higher refractive index gives it more rainbow "fire" in direct light. On a full iced-out chain with 300 stones, the effect is blinding.
• The price. A fully iced 10mm Cuban chain runs roughly $550–$800 in moissanite versus $2,200–$4,000 in lab diamond. The savings scale with every stone.
• The durability. At 9.25 Mohs, moissanite is the second-hardest gemstone used in jewelry. It won't scratch in daily wear — it takes another moissanite or a diamond to damage it.

Moissanite vs Cubic Zirconia (CZ) — Don't Confuse Them

The biggest scam in budget jewelry is selling CZ and calling it moissanite. CZ is glass-like: hardness 8–8.5, dull after months, no fire. Moissanite is a crystalline gemstone that keeps its sparkle for decades. Rule of thumb: if a "diamond look" piece costs under $30, it's CZ. True moissanite pavé cannot be made for that.

What Documents Come With Your Piece

Moissanite is not graded on the diamond clarity scale, so there is no GIA- or IGI-style grading report for it. What you can ask for is a certificate — a document confirming the material, weight, shape and colour characteristics of the stone. At NOVAE ATELIER, pieces with a centre stone over 1ct ship with a certificate, and every smaller pavé stone is held to our own stone standard (D–F colour, VVS-grade clarity) before it is set.

How to Care for Moissanite Jewelry

• Clean monthly: warm water, mild dish soap, soft toothbrush — 2 minutes restores full sparkle.
• Avoid harsh chemicals: chlorine and bleach can weaken metal settings over time.
• Store separately: moissanite can scratch other gemstones and softer metals.
• Check settings yearly: with hundreds of stones, a loose stone should be re-set before it's lost.
