Can You Tell Them Apart?

To the naked eye, a D-F VVS moissanite and a D-F VVS lab diamond look extremely similar — especially at the small sizes (<3mm) used in pavé settings. Under magnification, moissanite shows more "fire" — rainbow-colored flashes — due to its higher refractive index (2.69 vs diamond's 2.42). Some people prefer this extra sparkle. Others prefer diamond's cooler, whiter brilliance.

Practical truth: on a fully iced-out chain with 200+ small stones, nobody — including a jeweler — can reliably tell moissanite from lab diamond without magnification. The visual difference only matters on center stones over ~0.3ct.

Hardness & Durability

Moissanite at 9.25 Mohs is the second-hardest gemstone used in jewelry, behind only diamond. It will not scratch from daily wear — it takes another diamond or moissanite to scratch it. The practical durability difference between moissanite and diamond is negligible. A well-set moissanite stone will outlast a poorly set diamond every time.
